7 complete questions

1. Who is Angela Shanté? I'm a teacher, poet, and writer. When I am not writing I work as an educational consultant and curriculum specialist.

2. How did you come to know you wanted to be a writer? I liked writing poetry as a kid. When I was in Middle School a teacher entered one of my poems into a contest that won me entry into a kids anthology book. There was a big ceremony and dinner at a college in New York and I, a girl who rarely left The Bronx, was both honored and blown away. It felt nice to have people connect and relate to my work and ever since I've been writing poetry and sharing it.

3. Did you go to school to be a writer? When I went to college I majored in Education because I loved kids and wanted to work in the public school system. All the while I was teaching I was performing in open mics around New York City. I later went back to school to get an MFA in Creative Writing because I wanted to strengthen my pen on the page.

4. What is your picture book about? My picture book is called "The Noisy Classroom" and it's about my time in the classroom. I've always had one leg in education and the other in the literary world. I wrote the book because I wanted to bring them together.

5. What's next for you? I'm currently working on an experimental novel/poetry book called "A Bodega of One's Own" another picture book, titled, "The Noisy Classroom Goes to the Library" and my second book, "When my Cousins Come to Town" pubs May 2021.

6. What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who wants to be a writer? I'd say, if you want to be a writer you need to write, you should get a writing group/community that feeds your writer-soul, and you should read... a lot.

7.  What is a writing dream of yours? At the moment I'm in the Hillman Grad Mentorship program headed by Lena Waithe. My dream goal is to get something produced by her production company. She's doing amazing things with respect to diversity and representation in front of and behind the camera. I'd like my pilot or one of my page-projects to be picked up and put on screen. That would be a dream come true!
