The Journey of a Self-Published Author vs. a Traditional Author — and How You Can Support
For many writers, the dream of seeing their name on the cover of a book has two main paths — traditional publishing or self-publishing. Both routes have their challenges, rewards, and misconceptions. As an author who has chosen the self-publishing journey, I’m often asked, “What’s the difference, and how can we support you?”
Traditional Publishing
Traditionally published authors sign with a publishing house, big or small. These companies handle editing, cover design, marketing, distribution, and placement in bookstores. The author may receive an advance but earns royalties on sales. Traditional publishing can provide credibility and visibility, but the process is highly competitive. Agents, query letters, and rejections are part of the norm. Creative control is often limited, with publishers having the final say on edits, covers, and sometimes even the title.
Self-Publishing
Self-published authors wear many hats — writer, editor, marketing director, and even shipping manager. Platforms like Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, and Square allow authors to publish their work without gatekeepers. While the freedom is empowering, it also means investing time and money in professional editing, cover design, and promotion. Every sale is a victory because it often results directly from the author’s hard work.
Why Supporting a Self-Published Author Matters
Self-published authors rely heavily on their readers, communities, and social networks. Without the backing of a major publisher, visibility is one of the biggest hurdles. Every purchase, review, share, or recommendation helps push their work into new hands.
How You Can Support Both — Especially Self-Published Authors:
✅ Buy the Book – Every sale counts.
✅ Leave a Review – Amazon, Goodreads, or the author’s website.
✅ Share on Social Media – Word of mouth is powerful.
✅ Invite Them to Speak – Book clubs, podcasts, libraries, and schools.
✅ Recommend Their Work – Referrals mean everything.
✅ Follow & Engage – Likes, comments, and follows help build an author’s platform.
Both publishing paths produce incredible stories worth reading. If you’ve read a self-published author’s work and enjoyed it, consider taking that extra step to support their journey. It makes a world of difference.
Thank you for being part of the community that keeps authors, especially self-published ones, inspired and writing.
