My Purpose

My Purpose
As a young girl you play with dolls
You are the Momma and your dolls your children
You have crushes on the little boy next to you
You put a pillow under your top and play like you’re having a baby
As you mature you have boyfriends
Some go to proms
Some have arranged marriages
Some have relationships where the man does propose
You marry
The pressure is on for when you are going to have children
Is that your purpose to be a wife and a mother?

Some never want to have children
Some find themselves in situations where they have children and give up the right
As a woman you have to compete in a man's world, still be the sexy wife, and mother.
What about the woman who isn't married
Does society dictate what her purpose should be?

Reading magazines, watching the news, and speaking with other women there are mixed emotions.
1.      There are more women CEO's now more than ever yet there is still women doing the same job as their male colleagues and getting paid less.

2.      Board of Directors for most fortune 500 companies doesn’t have women sitting on the boards and yet we have more women with extensive backgrounds, higher education, and the seat isn’t filled.

3.      More women are opting to not get married, adopt children, and have a support system that enabled them to still have a work life balance.

4.      Women are getting into politics to have a voice and speak for those who aren’t heard and can’t speak for themselves.

5.      Women aren’t afraid to travel solo anymore and are traveling the world. Having more disposable income.

When asked what my purpose is? To make a path for those coming behind me, to lead by example what a well educated woman working in Corporate America looks like and also is African American. Provide for my family by being an entrepreneur, providing a support system for other women who share their experiences and continue learning.  My path didn’t include having children of my own but I have nieces and nephews that are my legacy.
