You Got A Story To Write
Whenever
I am at an event for a book signing I am always approached with a reader who
has a story that they want to write a book about.
I
have only a few minutes between greeting and signing a book so I advise them to
either reach out to myself later for details or do your due diligence and
research.
We
all have a story to share with someone on various subjects that goes into
various categories of books. I chose for myself when I was starting out to
write about poetry and later I started writing nonfiction.
How
did I start?
I
decided to write a book after the passing of my mother who had Alzheimer’s. It
was what my determination was to publish a book and I didn’t know where to
start. I reached out to my niece who had
written a book and she sent me information on self publishing.
I
chose self publishing versus traditional because I wanted to have the control
of writing on subjects that I wanted and not feel boxed in. I love the internet
because you’re able to research various companies that provide the service of
printing on demand and the services that they provide. You’re also able to read
reviews from others who have used their services.
I
wrote my manuscript, uploaded it, paid for the service of the book cover
design, formatting, distribution, copyright certification, and received 25
copies of my book.
I
hired an editor to edit my work, make suggestions and my book went through 3
rounds of edits before I signed off on the galley to have it ready for
production.
I
chose to have my book in paperback and eBook format.
I
hired a publicist to field interviews, write press releases and advise me on
what my niche was that I wanted to market to.
I
had a website developed which was part of the package and I promoted my book on
social media.
Still
working a full time job that was 9-5 I would schedule interviews for podcasts
and talk radio during my lunch and breaks. When I arrived home I was scheduling
book tours, book signings and looking for more events to sell my books.
Being
self published isn’t easy, doesn’t mean you’re going to become a millionaire,
and you have to remember why you wrote the book in the first place. Majority of
the work is done by yourself, you’re investing in your dream, and the results
are what you make it.
You
got a story? Well decide are you ready to put the work in. If you’re ready then
go for it and the best of luck to you my fellow author. The world is waiting.
