10 Things you may not know about me

10 Things you may not know about me

  1. I love to sing . Since I was a child until  a young adult I was always in the church choir. I inherited the love of music from my father who had a beautiful baritone voice. Now I sing in my car while driving.
  2. I can burn in the kitchen aka I can cook. My parents had me later in life . Majority of my siblings were out of the house when I was growing up so I was my parent's shadow. Both loved to cook and I would watch them both. My mother cooked all the meals for the house since she was self employed and ran a boarding home . My father would bake or cook in the evening when he had a taste for something. I realize that is where I get it from. At ten o'clock at night I decide to bake a banana bread because I have a taste for something sweet . I will have a slice and bring the rest to work. My favorite dishes to make is lasagna, macaroni and cheese and St. Louis barbecue ribs.
  3. Travel bug- traveling domestic or international is my guilty pleasure. To be on a beach, on a cruise, or in a hotel . I enjoy relaxing, sightseeing, and eating the food from the destination I am in heaven. I love meeting people so wherever I go I meet a new friend.
  4. My favorite author is Maya Angelou because she wrote from experience and her words flow like music to your ear as you're reading. She is the inspiration  why I became a writer. I wanted to write a book to express my words and read her books to know this is what I want to do.
  5. Music- when I write poetry or novels I sit in my home office, write in my journals or laptop and listen to music. All types from smooth jazz, R&B and even rap to get my creative vibes going and motivates me when I am having a writer's block.
  6. I participated in the 2015 5k marathon for the American Heart Association when I turned 50. It was liberating because no one thought I could do it. I had to raise funds and received support from my family. I had family members walking with me when I was training. I did it in honor of my mother who had high blood pressure, heart condition, and had suffered a stroke. Every Saturday morning those walks to get conditioned I had time to reflect on my life. Nothing could stop me was the feeling I had after crossing the finish line.
  7. Stand Up Comedy- my friends and family say that I am hilarious and should do stand up. I probably could but I think I would shock the audience. Laughter is the best medicine and I only get sick once a year.
  8. Public Speaking- the reason I started  public speaking when doing book signings and I read from my books.I would start a dialogue with  the audience, sharing about working in a hostile environment, being a caregiver, going through grief ;they understood the background of what my thought process was for a particular piece. I started sharing more about my life , the situations and a film director made the suggestion to start speaking . This will help someone was the #1 goal.  I wanted to help  and I use my platform to do that.
  9. My goal when I started writing my first book was to publish a book annually until the pen stops . Meaning if I felt it was time to retire the pen because of age or illness.  There were times I wanted to give up but I remembered my goal .
  10. Poetry saved my life. When I felt alone, was ready to give up on life, and had words bottled up. I went to my old journal and read pages from my past. Goals were scrolled across the pages and it reminded me of my passion. I can see someone, overhear a conversation, or see something on the television and I grab my pen. I sometimes don't have access so I record the name of the poem and later I am triggered again by the feelings I had and I continue letting the words flow until the pen stops.
